You know, I’m really curious because I never see it discussed in leftist spaces much, but since it’s one of the biggest forums on the internet, what’s y’all’s feelings on Resetera?
Fair. I find it especially funny that’s often looked at as the de facto leftist Internet forum
Where do you start with Althusser?
For Marx might be his most accessible but i do remember one part in that was pretty hard to read but that was more towards the end
Where do you start with Althusser?
Depends what you’re looking for. Are you more interested in Marxist philosophy or theory on ideology?

What are good ways to get started with either?

For ideology I would maybe start with this shorter essay which later became the larger book On Capitalist Reproduction: Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses
marxists.org/reference/archive/althusser/1970/ideology.htm
I actually find the full book to be an easier read tbh but that’s a nice overview if you want something shorter. Regardless, read the full book if you get the chance. I think it’s essential reading for Marxists
Most people will say For Marx for philosophy, but I think it’s better to start with one of his essays about Marxism and philosophy in general to get a better idea of how he approaches philosophy first
I recommend Part 2 of this marx2mao.com/Other/PSPS90NB.html

Was going to ask for both so I'm glad scratchin got to it before me
Gonna save this in my reading notes, thank you
Where do you start with Althusser?
It really depends on how much Marxist theory you have already been exposed to. “Philosophy for non-Philosophers” is super accessible and might be a good introduction if you don’t have much background knowledge on Althusser.
Ideology and ideological state apparatuses is an essay and a must read for Althusser. For Marx is another collection of essays and pretty interesting and central to Althusser’s epistemological break.
Reading Capital is another major work by Althusser and extremely influential (imo).

Thank you so much
What would you'd say I should read to expose myself to enough Marxist theory before diving into Althusser?
I know there's a lot I need to learn before diving into his work but I just wanted to ask this preemptively to prepare for when I was ready because this thread was the first time I even heard of dude which is crazy to me
(off of an avy post too
very thankful for this thread)
can somebody re-up the discord link? i’ve been lurking for a minute and this is my favorite thread on here.

Stalin is innocent
Stalin is guilty of compromising with the west in Italy and Greece
Im sure its been pointed but im reading Open Veins of Latin America right now and the ,Conquistadors use of Christianity to justify their deeds sounds eerily close to how the Americans justify their own activities with "freedom/Democracy". US colonialism in the latter half of the 19th century made of use of both Christianity and freedom/Demlcracy

american public consciousness is largely derivative culturally of post-christian moral thinking so a lot of things like that are definitely just part of that looming specter
a lot of it isnt necessarily externalized just arbitrarily though (i.e. us vs them or similar) its a result of how these moral/cultural frameworks are largely universalized within society. mainstream christian moral frameworks have and always will be universalist ethically and you see that mirrored in the behavior of societies descended from it

Europe if Gnosticism won would've been crazy
