I said if I was British In the 30s I would prefer a Long Knives (which targeted political rivals) over a Great Purge (which targeted a vast and vague assortment of "fifth column wreckers") and Holodmor (which starved an entire country to keep it under heel). I appreciate the half response. But on what you do have, the holodomor is literal Nazi propaganda.

The purges is much more nuanced and there is heavy debate even among communists over the severity or necessityof it was. However, most purged members were really just kicked out of the party. The actual number executed is much lower than western academia reports.

Without understanding the external pressures the USSR faced it is easy to then paint every action as “authoritarian” or “non authoritarian”.

USSR was probably one of the most if not the most hated country on Earth at that point in history.
