Expanding America’s influence and providing people with aid are not mutually exclusive, but to be clear are not mutually inclusive either.

well, their is a difference between nationalism and patriotism. the communist party of the soviet union attacked the great russian chauvanism of their time and encouraged the patriotism of those who believed in the USSR as a minority-run multinational confederation.

yeah and i’m not a fan of the ussr handling of patriotism/nationalism, stalin can get away with it cause of hitler but it did nothing to make people identify with the soviet state rather than their national boundaries, especially with how nationalism ended destroying the ussr in the end

  • Feb 19, 2025

like by Brezhnev, great russian chauvinism was back

I dont really think that's true. socialism simply wouldn't have been possible in the USSR without the creation of new socialist nations (ukraine, moldova, armenia, etc.). nationalisms were the result of revisionism on the part of the later party and the abandonment of class struggle.

Russian nationalism was big part of the RSFR splitting from the USSR and its disintegration, russians started viewing the other regions as drains on the russian and they’d be better off without em.

i dont see any use of patriotism other than it being instantly co-opted by the right especially in america whether that’s a word problem or concept problem whatver

I agree. this was the result of ideological decay in the party, the abandonment of class struggle against bourgeois ideology, increased material incentives, the creation of a managerial class, etc. nothing about it however, was endemic to the overall multinational structure of the USSR, which will necessarily need to be reconstructed in the future on an anti-revisionist basis.

my point of contention is between the ussr being a multinational state and the nationalities being subservient to the soviet identity which i prefer the latter

my problem being how do u guarantee that the multinational state isn’t being destroyed by nationalist contentions like what happened it wasn’t just russia, georgia nationalism and bunch of other minorities nationality were going for the breakup

and i dont see multinational states being able to go beyond these contradictions rather than suppress them

You can't really escape it though, it's less of an active ideological stance and something that's going to inherently exist based on shared political goals and cultural background. This is what lib commentators get wrong on Mao, who think he was actively a nationalist instead of understanding that there's a distinction between nationalism in politics and "nationalism" as a result of mass alignment.
If anything there's likely an argument that patriotism is impossible in the US (or imperialist core in general) due to the number of distinct competing cultures. This was something the Lenin/Stalin USSR philosophy doesn't really work with the same way since the region hadn't globalized yet - i would have probably bet the USSR's strategy on cultural heterogeneity wouldn't have worked if the country had already been competing in hyper-global trade and exchange.

nothing in this life is ever guaranteed but the way you root it out is through cultural revolution to destroy right-wing ideology at its core. in the practical sense, this means prioritizing socialist construction in the most backward national formations (famously, the parts of the USSR that developed a fascist fifth column were the parts that were the least developed, the communists simply ran out of time and couldn't socialize these areas quickly enough before the outbreak of the war).
