The thing you immediately notice about China (when you’re here in the capacity I am at least, maybe not as much if you were a generic tourist) is how much of their culture is aspirational towards Japan & America while still preserving heavy nationalistic sentiment. There are times here you really think you’re just in America. Ironically the most Chinese cultural aspects are typically in some manner state subsidized rather than “organic”. You get the feeling of how much of society is racialized here in a way I haven’t really seen discussed in detail before; I think this is because white people here on their own are unlikely to notice it (it’s not aimed at them and they’re used to being the center of attention).

China in many ways really is an idealized version of what America thought it was going to be post-90s. The hyper-consumerism, luxury explosion, over-dissemination of conviences, metropolitanism, etc.
So many things we make fun of Americans for are so much more prevalent here. From the outside you know about it but seeing the scale in person is nuts. So many office workers here in their middle management jobs are like Chinese doordashing single cups of coffee from 10 mi away and the driver’s getting paid $0.25 lmao

I am not joking when I say that 70% of Chinese infrastructure is built around maximizing the efficiency of food delivery apps

    bring back the cultural revolution

Visiting a Chinese office building makes you fundamentally underatand that Mao got a divine prophetic glimpse of the future and did everything in his power to prevent the timelines from converging

I am not joking when I say that 70% of Chinese infrastructure is built around maximizing the efficiency of food delivery apps

A common transition in developed economies moving from agricultural, to manufacturing and then to service based economies (or even digital economies)

Delivery apps deliberately bypass most employment laws to pay their workers nothing, but the convenience added to those who can afford buying it is unmatched. I definitely see this being a growing problem in both China and the US but expect China to better tackle it. Though it’s interesting how culturally China is changing just as you pointed out how similar to US in the 90s it currently is.

That's be my guess too, he was always up in the s***. Seemed to be comically incompetent compared to the rest of the inner circle.
