i think the idea that you have to identify yourself as a "socialist" or "liberal" has more to do with capitalisms nature of stripping meaning from people's lives so they can buy into a pre-existing identity to make them more complacent consumers.

marxism is just a tool to examine the socioeconomic and political contradictions in society. and the "choice" to identify as either liberal or conservative is mostly just a ploy to keep people locked in a culture war while politicians and corporations strip society of all of its benefits.

if you understand dialectical materialism and you still choose to be a liberal, you're really choosing to see the conditions of everybody you love continually get more precarious while the society around you simultaneously gets worse and worse.

if you want to convince yourself that there is a meaningful difference between being a conservative and liberal ig you're free to do so but there is good you can do in the world if you so choose
