Online privacy is so f***ed. Even posting on this forum is f***ed, or even visiting select subreddits without even posting. The NSA has literally all the information on every single global citizenthey could ever want. They can have all of us on a "communist" list if they really wanted to create a list like that which makes me scared down the line considering anti-communist purges etc

eh, you kinda come to terms with it
the average person's data is for sale, for cheap and I don't necessarily mean advertisers either
SSNs, cards, browser cookies, bank logins, etc.
any mildly-competent nerd snooping around the right places can get ahold of someone's data for cheap and play around
its largely due to bad security practices on the part of corporations, governments and various public/private utilities
cyber-war is the new conventional warfare, every nation-state has some type of APT group and everyone spies on each other
the internet truly is the greatest deal with the devil humanity ever made, we are now globally connected at the biggest pace ever, but then we sacrificed "anonymity through obscurity" previous societal eras enjoyed and it is now mainly owned by corporate interests instead of the people
i can rant about this all day, but generally my thoughts on technology is that copyleft is the way to go, and to open-source every advancement to further refinement and innovation
its quite sad to me that a lot of tech enthusiasts are stuck in this corpo-worshipping nonsense when the advancements didn't come from CEOs and execs, it came from passionate experimentation

Good post here
I think the internet was a super big let down. People (even including Steve Jobs, he went into what is now known as sillicon valley and did a bunch of acid and theorized about the openness of the internet; there's a book about it, huge movement, forgot the name)..
basically, people in the early 80s/90s thought that it was going to be a great place to escape the commodification of capitalism (it was), but eventually it did get sucked into the base of society and revolutionized the means of production. in turn, itself (e.g. internet service providers) and its parts (ecommerce, social media, etc) became a commodity. The rush to become the first/best to utilize these new means of production lead to the burst in the early 2000's
Ultimately any new information technology, or rather, technology in general will be 1. used by the bourgeoisie to revolutionize, increase and improve production as well as 2. use that technology to generate / tap into new markets.
Because of this I feel that it's disingenuous to say copyleft is something that people need to simply embrace -- people won't. The entire superstructure of society prevents that and doesn't incentivize the reduction of 1) increasing production or 2) tapping into new markets.
This extends a lot to like, other things, like the tendency of people to say "oh we just need to build more worker co-ops" -- no -- you need to work where the power is at. there is a reason why worker co-ops aren't everywhere despite the obvious benefit.
