2016 and 2020 were the peak years of social media brainworms 2016 fr collectively melted the brain of the population, the entire anti-Trump phenomena really cemented the whole idea of armchair activism and social media signaling. It definitely existed prior (the whole youtube "anti-SJW"/new atheism/web-feminism/etc. scene was def the prototype of this), but it kinda stayed in its little slimy corner, 2016 completely exploded that to new heights and it's never gone back to normal then 2020 rolled around and that really solidified it even more, esp. the whole idea of "thing of the week" activism, it's funny how the powers that be really managed to manipulate social media well enough that it just naturally mimicked the ebb and flow of traditional media chyrons and news cycles

the actual reason they ask you these questions which you think who tf would answer yes (i.e. the terrorist one) is actually deceptive, it's a really scummy legal trick - if the government thinks you're a person of interest in an investigation or something, it's so they can bring you up on charges of fraud (i.e. you answered no but they think the answer is yes) if they can't actually ding you for anything else.
