Aight serious question: Is it possible to be socialist or even communist without condoning some of the s*** done by socialist nations in the past

Like ion really f*** with Stalin nem and while the Tsar Nicholas was a terrible leader i dont fw how the Bolsheviks murked his entire family

Also w regards of the Romanov family, that wasn't just done in normal circumstances, the Czechoslovakian army was encircling where they were held captive and they were going to rescue them and install them again, and that could have been any of those of the bloodline, that's how monarchy works unfortunately, it wasn't done out of retribution or anything

Well yeah I'm not tryna say that their contributions aren't important, especially those of Lenin, but I think splits based on a different tendency should ideally be restricted because they have practical implications for how you organize, and I think people sometimes get too lost in splitting based on historical questions and whether Cuba or DPRK are revisionist or not, I don't really see how that's productive.

And yeah you'll never really fit entirely in one, but I feel like people often act like they do, or change their positions on something in order to fit better under one tendency. Like is there any underlying theoretical construct that logically explains why you would inevitably regard PPW as universal if you think that a mass line is important?

With regards to putting it in practice, I agree to an extent, and I'm not doing the whole Marxists are cultists because they use names thing lol, I'm not an anarchists. There is importance in theory being put to practice, but if under the leadership of Lenin or Mao there was no successful revolution for reasons outside of the control of their movements, does that now make their contributions less valid?

I just don't see why the contributions of Gramsci should be taken less seriously for example just because Italy never had a successful revolution.

PPW heavily relies on the mass line and isn’t possible without it. They’re not at odds at all

Oh I'm not saying they're at odds. Just saying that there's not necessarily a reason that when you think the mass line is important that you would have to think PPW is universal, and that I feel like people often adopt certain stances on whatever position based on the tendency they already claim to be a part of rather than the merits of the position.

Like I'm sure some MLs are unnecessarily opposing of mass line because it's a part of Maoism, or because they think PPW isn't universal, they think PPW isn't applicable anywhere and that they say that based on being part of a certain camp instead of any real a***ysis. Same with Maoists or any other tendency really.

Rereading German ideology and I'm fr just wondering how anybody could disagree with historical materialism, like the premises it's based on are so obviously true I'm just wondering wtf anybody could say to deny it lol. Like read this s*** and tell me how anybody who isn't high smoking smth crayz would disagree

It's very telling that refutations of historical materialism are also always just b******izations of the theory that it's some type of deterministic theory that says all societies go through the same stages and inevitably end with the FINAL STAGE: COMMUNISM and that was Marx's PROPHECY

i think in general most (actually educated on the subject and not just looking for conflict because of buzzwords) people dont necessarily think historical materialism is wrong per-se, but disagree with the extrapolations from it

I mean if you understand the extrapolations of it to be the world goes thru these stages snd inevitably ends with this one then i understand lol

Historical materialism is a method of studying history, not an excuse to not study history

well i just mean Marx & Engels themselves said that it wasnt meant to be a grand theory of everything basically but many people do try to treat it that way.
it's also just meant to be a means of studying macro-history and not meant to explain every single thing that has happened ever. like its really annoying when people argue (not saying on here but just in general) that purely ethnic or religious conflicts arent real and try to cite this theory - like that's clearly not what they were actually saying and its a clear bastarization of it

Oh yeah i agree, like i said at that point it becomes not a method of studying history but an excuse not to study history and people try to use historical materialism as like psychoanalysis on individual people's motives lol

Marx himselself talked about how people b******ized historical materialism, both critics and people who claim to uphold it:

"Russia... will not succeed without having first transformed a good part of her peasants into proletarians; and after that, once taken to the bosom of the capitalist regime, she will experience its pitiless laws like other profane peoples. That is all. But that is not enough for my critic. He feels himself obliged to metamorphose my historical sketch of the genesis of capitalism in Western Europe into an historico-philosophic theory of the marche generale imposed by fate upon every people, whatever the historic circumstances in which it finds itself, in order that it may ultimately arrive at the form of economy which will ensure, together with the greatest expansion of the productive powers of social labor, the most complete development of man. But I beg his pardon. (He is both honouring and shaming me too much.)"

    Engels too:

"Just as Marx used to say, commenting on the French "Marxists" of the late 70s: "All I know is that I am not a Marxist." ... In general, the word "materialistic" serves many of the younger writers in Germany as a mere phrase with which anything and everything is labeled without further study, that is, they stick on this label and then consider the question disposed of. But our conception of history is above all a guide to study, not a lever for construction after the manner of the Hegelian. All history must be studied afresh, the conditions of existence of the different formations of society must be examined individually before the attempt is made to deduce them from the political, civil law, aesthetic, philosophic, religious, etc., views corresponding to them. Up to now but little has been done here because only a few people have got down to it seriously. In this field we can utilize heaps of help, it is immensely big, anyone who will work seriously can achieve much and distinguish himself. But instead of this too many of the younger Germans simply make use of the phrase historical materialism (and everything can be turned into a phrase) only in order to get their own relatively scanty historical knowledge—for economic history is still in its swaddling clothes!—constructed into a neat system as quickly as possible, and they then deem themselves something very tremendous. And after that a Barth can come along and attack the thing itself, which in his circle has indeed been degraded to a mere phrase."

That Engels quote reminds me a lot of online leftists who just use MATERIAL CONDITIONS as a buzzword to say they're right without actually actually a***yzing said conditions
