Crazy how korea was artificially split in two against the wishes of 99% of people but 70 years later two different countries have formed with their own identity. Nationalism/Nations so fake but they're real to people at the same time.

Look at Austria and Germany for an even older example

    • Albert Einstein wrote to President Roosevelt on 2 August 1939, alerting him to the possibility of constructing a powerful bomb turning uranium into a new and important source of energy. “The most important source of uranium is Belgian Congo,” Einstein wrote.
    • ...a special unit of the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA, that was set up to purchase and secretly remove all the uranium from the unique uranium mine in Katanga province Shinkolobwe in Belgian Congo

    • Ultimately, the Congolese mine furnished nearly two-thirds of the uranium used for the bomb (nicknamed “Little Boy”) dropped on Hiroshima, and it also contributed to the production of much of the plutonium used in the bomb (“Fat Man”) dropped on Nagasaki three days later.

It's also interesting to see kind of the reverse happening in the US. Started off as a bunch of states with their own regional identity, only in a union to make sure they don't kill each other (they eventually do anyways). Now they're all just Americans.

I think that identity is tearing itself apart as a result of so many material contradictions

Also true. These things are never set in stone. Even the regional splits are rn are different from the prior ones.

My former buddy and I would talk about politics a lot. He read Marx, Foucault, Hegel, Popper and a bunch of stuff like Dostoevsky, Kafka, Proust. He definitely said weird stuff from time to time but I did my best over the years to slowly redpill him. He started calling himself a "classical liberal" one day, saying how bankers causing the financial crisis should be hung for "not taking any personal risks", and he glowingly spoke of Homage to Catalonia. His ideal society would be super decentralized and market-based. Okay....

The elections in Germany come up and we talk about who we voted for. I personally voted for Left Party and the German Communist Party (you have two votes). This guy tells me, after all that s*** he said earlier, that he just voted twice for CDU (Merkel's party). I said why? His response: "My friend has an uncle who is in the CDU and donated a lot of money after the recent floods for the victims. That really impressed me." That was his reason for voting for the CDU in the national elections - some guy's business man uncle doing some charity. Lmfao

Deng supported literal royalists against the Lao communist government, supported Pol Pot AFTER he had renounced communism against Kampuchea, and invaded Vietnam (and got their asses kicked) because they were f***ing seething about the USSR.

Theres a Brezhnev quote where he tells his speechwriter "Nobody will believe I read Marx"

    this whole f***ing wikipedia article
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_political_jokes#Brezhnev
"Leonid Ilyich is in surgery." / "His heart again?" / "No, chest expansion surgery, to make room for one more Gold Star medal." This makes reference to Brezhnev's elaborate collection of awards and medals.

During Brezhnev's visit to England, Prime Minister Thatcher asked the guest, "What is your attitude to Churchill?" "Who is Churchill?" Brezhnev said. Back in the embassy, the Soviet envoy said, "Congratulations, comrade Brezhnev, you've put Thatcher in her place. She will not ask stupid questions any more." "And who is Thatcher?" Brezhnev said.
