Tbh the extent to which behind the scenes things are given a veneer of objectivity in Western media to the conflict is wild. Tbh at the beginning of the conflict even I underestimated Western involvement in supporting the TPLF bc it's all rly secretive and done with a veneer of objectivity

You got academics from Belgium like Alex de Waal publishing academic research presenting evidence of supposed human rights abuses by the Ethiopian govt and it's presented as neutral, then a month later he's posting memorials of old TPLF foreign minister that waged war against Eritrea, Somali along with brutal internal killings of several ethnic groups

Also TPLF members having entire zoommeetings leaked with US diplomats and Tigrayan NGOs funded by the NED and founded on the same exact day that the TPLF started the war by attacking military bases

The s*** goes deep but it's all behind the scenes

a large part of it is that the illusion of meritocracy in the US was a lot stronger in part because society at least had some forms of meritocratic elements, primarily in government, which allowed people like Kissinger to go up the ranks especially as this was divorced from electoral politics or popular approval

over time there was less of a reason to maintain those meritocratic illusions because the US more or less concretely cemented itself on an exterior basis for its global hegemony, and also because it was (probably unconsciously) realized that on a societal level, meritocracy != capital growth. however the off-side effect of that is that you can't really separate the practicality of structuring society in a way to make money aside from the functionality of society acting in the way that its structured. so you end up with a society where the neolib tenets from the post-meritocracy era are essentially accepted as a religious framework
