krishna boundLibya giving up nukes was easily the worst mistake Gaddafi made, but I understand why he did it to the extent he expected it to not just be transactional but as a means of his idea of political good
unfortunately that idea was misguided and too optimistic
he saw saddam get captured and assumed that the westoids would spare him if he threw them a bone
from my understanding, Gaddafi drastically improved the material conditions of Libya from the time he assumed power, but there was little opportunity for real democratic participation from Libyans, and also existing antagonisms between the East and West of Libya. these two things + rising food prices as a result of increased privatization led to mass uprisings against him that quickly became militant
it was a "fair" battle between the rebels and Gaddafi until NATO stepped in and just started bombing everything.
US came in with AC-130s to bypass the no boots on the ground stipulation of Resolution 1973. so f***ed reading how the US used satellite imagery to spot Gaddafis troops, which was then relayed to rebel armies on the ground. thats so f***ing op
and despite all this technology they still managed to kill countless civilians and bomb civilian populated areas

You did have democratic participation through the elected general people's congress, but it wasn't exactly the direct democracy he said je wanted it to be, it was representative, and Gaddafi still held a lot of personal power

While chronologically his pan arab ideas didnt completely flounder yet, I don't think it's a coincidence this came out in 1975 and the arab islamic republic idea failed in 1974

saying this from personal experience although im sure yall have noticed but people who are able to even stumble their way through deprogramming capitalist realism also face in their own ways severe trauma through the shedding of the nice face of the capitalist system.
in essence there's this nightmare machine that 1. inflicts mass psychic damage to nearly every person incentivized to do something about it - and even to bystanders - and 2. the primary function of the world of ideology that we function inside of is to brainwash and massage the mess of contradictions (and 1.) into us in likely every conceivable and inconceivable way.
ig what im saying is that there's not much you can do until the larger currents of the base of society change, and to struggle too hard against it is adventurist and overly idealist?
also could the overt turn since the 70s of every marxist movement into even recognizing some need for a struggle to study the superstructure be related? in that whether conscious or not, the lack of the capability to navigate a clear path to revolution resulted in all this effort being spent scrutinizing mostly philosophical minutiae. like what's the point in refining the "purest" line when there's other s*** to be done; the answer being that there isn't s*** to be done so why not spend countless hours refining your line or something like that
