I don't think that's a mutually exclusive from the (correct) idea that the majority of people who claim or are diagnosed don't really have depression, and are just reacting to how s***ty and detached society is.

It's hard to exactly say what could have been done differently given the state they were in tho, and even when you can, that's easy to say in hindsight
