When Italy under Mussolini invaded Ethiopia for the second time in 1935 in its attempt to colonize Ethiopia, thousands of black Americans signed up as volunteers to fight against the Italian invasion, 1.5k from Harlem alone, but the US state department blocked them. Only a few of them slipped through, one of them being John Robinson who would command Ethiopia's air force during the war.

Ethiopia had become a symbol for pan-Africanism because in 1896 it was the first country to defeat a European attempt at colonization and remained the only African country to not be colonized, which is why so many black Americans were moved by Ethiopia defending itself from another attempt at colonizing Africa's last standing independent country.

In 1954 Haile Selassie visited Harlem to thank them for their solidarity, hundreds of thousands lined up in the streets to welcome them. One of Haile Selassie's stops was the Abyssinian Baptist Church, a church founded in 1808 by Ethiopian sailors and African Americans who protested against segregated churches in the US.
