Havana gleefully noted the wealth of the captured Bay of Pigs invaders: 100 plantation owners, 67 landlords of apartment houses, 35 factory owners, 112 businessmen, 179 lived off unearned income, and 194 ex-soldiers of Batista

This is one of those things which when you learn about it, it messes with your perception of world events significantly, yeah. Because like I get it, the Holocaust was closer to home to the US/EU, so it makes more sense to teach it due to cultural touchstones, but the fact there’s an event in modern history which is even worse by size/victims than the Holocaust which virtually no one in the west knows about at all is WILD

Is there something wrong with ridding your country of dissidents if their agendas were homophobic?

all i see is when nixon is involved you don't write so much

I don’t really keep up with Philippines or their politics actively beyond what was in the news, but from what I know about him I’d put him in a similar category to someone like Pinochet. Neolibs can argue he made stuff safer or made the country more money but ultimately the harm he did outweighs any arbitrary claim of economic good. And this is even assuming he had real policy, man was like what people here in the US fearmongered that Trump was.

Nah I’ve gone on the record before here multiple times saying Nixon/Kissinger’s foreign policy was basically demonic and easily a net negative in his presidency. Nixon said working with Kissinger was the worst decision of his life in retrospect but I don’t think that forgives it. Most of his foreign policy was basically irredeemable.

Had this mostly center-right friend and we talked about Scarface and he said "yeah castro sent all the criminals to the USA thats why marco rubio and those guys are so retärded"

ive seen some (definitely fringe tendency) comments that duterte is closer to a nonaligned leader than a straight up neoliberal, pointing to free healthcare, free university, indigenous autonomous zones, and a lot of (china backed) structural projects. this is something that i think warrants a lot of evidence to make the claim for so ive been searching for a bit trying to piece together what credit this argument has.
