It’s a long story so I’ll just copy paste the letter we sent them
“Good evening,
Omaha Tenants United is writing to you on behalf of your former tenants Donald and Destiny at 1732 S 14th St. Donald and Destiny experienced an inordinate amount of issues with their rental unit since the day they moved in. When viewing the house, the tenants brought up several issues with the unit including a broken AC unit, multiple plumbing issues including malfunctioning toilets and a leaking shower, structurally unsound ceilings, and a dangerously faulty fuse box. The tenants were promised that these would all be resolved by the time they moved in. However, when Donny and Destiny moved in on August 14th, none of these were addressed. The plumbing issues were so bad that Donald and Destiny were forced to use public restrooms while living there. On top of all these issues, there was a broken window and broken light bulbs that Donald and Destiny requested to be fixed multiple times, without anything having been done about them.
All and all, not only did Shanahan Management fail to provide adequate essential services, a dangerous environment was created and allowed to persist which threatened Donald and Destiny's safety, security, and health. These problems culminated on August 30th when Destiny was electrocuted due to water leaking on the ceiling falling onto the fuse box, requiring her to attend the Emergency Department. These conditions are simply inexcusable, and were clear violations of Nebraska Revised Statutes 76-1419 and 76-1427 of the Nebraska Landlord Tenant Act, which require landlords to provide essential services and maintain fit premises which are safe and in working condition.
Omaha Tenants United and Donald and Destiny are demanding the following as a means of compensating Donald and Destiny for these unacceptable slum conditions, which not represented a failure on Shanahan Management to uphold their basic duties as a landlord, but brought them physical harm due to the unacceptable slum conditions of your building.
The entirety of their deposition refunded: $1,740
All rent refunded that Donald and Destiny paid while they were renting from Shanahan Management: $2,205 (Note: Donald and Destiny were also promised they would not be charged for the month of October, but this has not yet been removed from their account)
Reimbursement of Destiny's medical bills: $2,000
An additional $2,000 to cover their moving expenses and general pain and suffering
In total, $7,945
OTU would like to remind Shanahan Management of section 76-1439, subsection (1b) of the Nebraska Landlord Tenant Act, which maintains a tenant's right to organize with a Tenant's Union or similar organization, and also prohibits any and all retaliation for doing so. Failure to respect this right can result in the recovery of up to three months rent, per section 76-1430 of the Nebraska Tenant Landlord Act. Donald and Destiny maintain their right to have any authorized OTU member speak on their behalf, and be present for any and all in-person and electronic communication
We look forward to resolving this serious issue quickly, and look forward to your timely response.
Sincerely,
Omaha Tenants United
Amazing. Was there anything to compel repairs other than continued fines?
This is awesome.
Got 3k for another couple a couple weeks ago so that’s over 10k back for tenants in one month

In this situation the tenants reached out to us after they were already in the process of moving out, so we weren’t actually compelling repairs, just using the fact that the LL ignored the tenants requests for repairs as leverage for the demand

Nice

Those type of wins are cool but simultaneously really frustrating
To really build tenant power, people who are living there and plan to remain living there need to be organized. Unfortunately a lot of people(understandably) wait until they’re planning on moving out to want to fight, since at that point they aren’t really threatened with eviction and retaliation
It’s cool to get big payouts for tenants like this but it is admittedly economism. The best wins are when we can really organize people who want to stay where they’re at so that there’s lasting tenant power in the building. That’s how we have to build independent organs of political power
I want to add to that that even tho it is economism in a strict sense, we are raising peoples consciousness and developing a fighting mentality for the working class in a world where traditional labor organizing is…not as feasible if it once was to say the least. We’re openly and proudly socialist/communist and all the tenants we organize know that and aren’t bothered by it. That’s getting people who otherwise might either not really care , or are even hostile to communism to think positively about communists and see that we’re down to ride for them
I’ve had some tough conversations with tenants who were somewhat spooked about our political orientation at first and they always come out thinking about socialism more positively than they did before
Kanye talking about how he'd build his towns sounding like a Stalinist
Henry Ford confirmed first Stalinist
Noticing link between sexual repression / policing women's behaviour and conservatism but can't elaborate, need to find some good pieces discussing it. Maybe this my cue to start reading about feminism

A dialectical a***ysis of our current events prove that the Kaiser, at this time, is playing a progressive role in combating Anglo imperialism and creating a United front against liberalism. Yes there are contradictions, he’s no communist, but nonetheless his role is progressive

Iirc it was common among british socialists to defend Japanese imperialism using similar arguments

would it be unreasonable to say that inter-capitalist conflict provides opportunity for progress and not progress itself? For obvious reasons this instability could create a lot of ammo for labor organization

This is what your post reminded me of
