Streaming ain’t enough to gauge popularity
Nope
Coworker music
Not me skipping around the job listening to Not Like Us
White people ain't f***ing with that Post Malone pivot?
Jelly Rolls took his lane
Streaming ain’t enough to gauge popularity
There’s some newer artists I’ve come across that I never heard of and see they have over a million streams on Spotify. But again, rarely any internet discussion about them.
And then I learn it’s cause one of their songs popped off on TikTok so idek if they have a true dedicated fanbase

On the other hand, OSAMASON has 3 million listeners and is putting on better shows in the same venues as baby keem (17m)
Not to say streaming numbers are useless, but they are moreso a measure of exposure. At the end of the day, who’s buying tickets? Merch? Albums?

streams don’t mean quality. there are probably unground shows you could find in your cities better than most major artists. these shows are more about being around fellow fans of an artist you mostly enjoy

Well that’s what I’m saying
Someone could have 17 million listeners but do they have 3 million fans ?
how is this any different from artists who the radio constantly played while people irl didn’t listen to them
Stores run 6 AM - 10/11p/12 AM while people typically aren't riding in their car just letting in play the radio in the background that long
Plus I'd assume radio play isn't streamed from a streaming service to count as streams but that's an assumption
But honestly this kinda is stacked on top of that bc I already assume radio play is manipulated towards artist like Trainor and Malone

Radio don’t get plays no more. People who complain about radio plays will boast about club plays. I heard Taylor swift and Drake at the gym today about 5 times and that was only 2 hours
That’s one gym out of 8-10 gyms within a 20 mile radius. My state has almost a hundred of those gyms, do the math
Tl;Dr post malone and Meghan trainor cancelling shows because most of their "streams" don't come from real people but moreso background listening at places Planet Fitness playing background music. This reminds me of the Lizzo situation in that other thread where it's like where did all her "fans" go
https://twitter.com/_callmedennis_/status/2072710248247570859We hold streaming numbers in such high regard but think about how many retail spaces or gyms or restaurants exist and presumably those plays count as streams. It kinda benefits you to make safe background easy listening music. I know I Shazam s*** from CVS and taco bell especially all the time lol. Reframes how one could look at big streaming numbers
This is also why Stephen A Smith gets to brag about being the number one sports show, no one really f***s with first take anymore but it’s playing at every gym airport or bar due to being espn

They could go back to having two hrs of SportsCenter in that time slot and that would go #1
They moved First Take to ESPN in that slot to save it cuz it was failing horribly after Skip left.
Literally anything else could work.
yes, Spotify has retail deals with companies like Starbucks and Target and Apple so the devices Apple provides for the stores come pre-loaded with Spotify playlists, why this numbers s*** and Spotify focus has to be deaded quickly
realized this when i was manager and would unplug the device to plug my phone into the aux and artists would “takeover” the playlist for a month which in reality is just a boost to their streaming numbers from playlists playing their music across 1000+ stores, 12+ hours a day
Damn Starbucks be playing deep cuts sometimes too
I get some of my world music recs by shazaming the songs they play
just pirate music instead of renting it
Sideloading
Do not check up on this man
Post Malone was doing a stadium tour last year
I think people are being dramatic about him

This strategy being brought to the forefront recontextualizes a lot lol
Gyms airports bars and even s*** like car shops, cafes, restaurants
S*** be rigged

Judging from Keem’s set at Gov Ball, his next tour probably going to be arena size venue
meghan trainor was basically white lizzo in covid era
lizzo was 2019-2022, so covid era. Meghan was 2014
