I had no idea Kanye was the same artist who did Slow Jamz, Jesus Walks, Heartless, Stronger, Can’t Tell Me Nothing, Through The Wire & every other song he made

I always listened to what was on the radio growing up but never tried to connect with any specific artist & most of the time didn’t know who was rapping or singing except for a few noticeable, well known voices

I got into music late at around the age of 16 due to getting my license & needed something/someone to listen to in my truck so I started looking up the songs that caught my attention at the time & wanted to see what that artist’s discography was like

HAM was on the radio at the time & that was the sound that stood out for me from the rest so I later dove into Kanye’s work bc I only knew him by heartless & I had already knew who Jay Z was. When I found out he made all these other legendary tracks I heard on the radio growing up it completely changed my perception of music. I didn’t know kanye by anything except his music. I didn’t know how the public perceived him or how respected he was in the industry. Nothing. So for me personally I became an organic fan based solely on his work

To this day idk how someone with his level of star power went unnoticed or unheard of in my life. My family were on & off in having cable tv so maybe having that disconnection from tv media is how it slipped me by plus no one in my family was truly into music

It’s been a long & intense journey since then & here I am now on a music forum to keep up with every possible detail in music

the story behind this is so nice:

"Kennedy Gordy (son of Berry Gordy, CEO of Motown at the time) had been writing songs as a child he later called ‘mediocre at best’. In his frustration, he prayed ‘to write a song that’ll go to the top of the charts’. Over the next two days, he wrote “Somebody’s Watching Me”.

He played a demo of the song for his father, but he was not impressed. So Kennedy then sang the song for long-time childhood friend Michael Jackson, who liked it so much he asked Kennedy to perform it multiple times, each time adding more of his own family members to the audience. When Jackson then asked who Kennedy planned to have sing backups, he asked Jackson to do it.

    • "I performed it about eight or nine times. Michael says, ‘Hey Rebbie! Hey Janet! You gotta hear this song Kennedy did.’ Every time we stopped the song, Michael called three more people down. Afterwards, Michael pulled me to the side and says, ‘Kennedy, I gotta talk to you for a second. Who are you going to get to sing background vocals?’ I said, ‘Why don’t you do it?’ It worked just like that."

Kennedy, wanting to not use his father’s name, secretly submitted the song to Motown under the name Rockwell. When Motown signed Rockwell without his father’s knowledge, Berry Gordy was initially flabbergasted – but later very proud of his son, even referring to him as Rockwell in public."

Beacuse of the lack of crediting, I always just thought they got a really good MJ impersonator

bonus trivia about this is that Rockwell (Kennedy Gordy) was going to a super elite LA high school with Lenny Kravitz and originally shopped the demo to him senior year before he played it to Mike and co.

never knew that song that goes “why’d you have to go and make tings so complicated” was avril lavigne
