It’s not the plastic box, it’s the fact that I can take my disc with my to a friends house, that we can trade games, and hold something with our hands.

    The box is f***ing meaningless

no way you are doing this in 2026

  • So does this also mean they’re seriously gonna drop PS6 next year?

How are console users so far behind LOL?

I bought a pc 10yrs ago and it didn’t come with a disk drive. The fact physical won’t be the future is a blessing.

I wish my MacBook had a disk drive tf that's cool why take the cool s*** away

I pay £11 a month here in the UK for a rental service which gives me one game at a time, including new releases. So £132 a year esentially the cost of buying 2 games

Keep an eye out for subscription deals on Black Friday, 12 months of PS Extra is like £100 now so should be even cheaper then. Main reason for going physical is owning the product but if you're renting, you might as well get access to the entire catalogue instead of renting one game at a time imo

Only disadvantage for you would be you're limited to whatever is on the catalogue, so not the latest games

accounts are the new bookshelves, tides shift, time marches forward, all our belongings will be ash one day.

In the time that I’m alive I’ll be happy with what I get. I won’t go on any forums to cry about inevitable change. A bunch of nerds will cry over their plastic boxes, and yeah, they’ll tell you to kill yourself because of what that plastic box means to them in the moment, but it’ll all be ash one day. Time marches forward.

This is such a ridiculous and nonsensical way to live life.

The crazy thing is nobody is even saying you shouldn't own games digitally. If you wanna own nothing, rent forever, and engage with all of your art in the nonexistent cloud, then that's totally your decision.

The problem with Sony's move is they are cutting out physicals completely and not giving people the choice anymore.

Music went digital, but CDs, vinyl, and cassettes still exist.

Kindles and Nooks came out, but bookstores are still filled with physical books all over the globe.

Movies and shows get pushed straight-to-streaming nowadays, but still get released on Blu-Ray and 4K UHD.

Games existing digitally does not mean that they have to cease existing physically. That is a decision that is informed purely by corporate greed, late stage capitalism, and anti-consumer ideals.

This is not technology advancing like you keep trying to frame it as, this is a company cutting costs to maximize profit and control the market

I feel like this was inevitable but to do it so soon and suddenly not give people the option anymore next gen - yeah, that's greed and maximising profits

I get the thinking that it was inevitable, but part of that has to do with the companies actions themselves. They've been trying to push people towards digital for a long time now, and this is them just saying "fuck it you don't even have the option anymore"

  • I know Don Mattrick and them must be heated. All that backlash from the Xbox One reveal when they were actually just 15 years ahead of their time. Had to change their whole s*** but today's consumers just going to accept it and keep buying the PlayStation 6 anyway

Even if it was companies pushing it, that's where we've been at for a while. Most people ITT talking about how they haven't bought physical games in years anyway

I definitely agree with you, I wasn't even considering the Pro when I got my PS5 late last year because I want the option to play the dozens of PS4 discs I have. As a consumer, at least give me the option
