Seems like he failed to understand what MJ was telling him the whole movie then. He can't make those decisions on his own

She told him not to do that when she learned he went to Strange and then he did it again when telling them they won't remember him again and she tried her best to hide the disappointment with the assurance he'd come back.

That's the same logic Tobey's Peter used in Spider Man 2 for why he couldn't be with Mary Jane and she said f*** that then too.

it seemed more like he had a reality check that it wouldn't be so easy to start that process again and opted to take it at his own speed. Dude walked into MJ's job with a paper script like of course it wasn't gonna work.
