For one the weak premise made it hard to become submersed in the story. Everything happened because Peter was being a visible idiot. First messing up the spell in a very dumb way, and then stealing the box. The whole time you're just like, this guy..

So by the time you get around to deaths like May it's not that impactful cause it kinda feels like she deserved that s*** for encouraging everything, and she died still saying dumb s*** 🙄🙄

i was super f***ing frustrated with how dumb the characters are too tho but as it progressed it got better for me. Peter's drive to be a good person and forcing scenarios to fit his perfect ending was his downfall. same with May in a way.
