I watched a video of a screen writer who says you write with the audience as the main character not the actual character.

In horror movies a girl picks up a flash light and hears a sound from upstairs and heads up there only for the flash light not to work when she gets all the way up the stairs

If you’re writing with the girl as the actual main character then you would have had her check the flashlight when she first found and not go upstairs when she hears the noise but then nothing happens and it’s not entertainment

It’s a cope but interesting pov from a screenwriter
