It’s something she does to feel closer to joel

And she thought that her revenge on Abby might finally be able to help her move on from the trauma of losing joel, but in reality she returns and can’t play guitar any more and leaves it in her house anyway

The symbolism of her trying to get revenge for Joel and ending up losing her last connection to him is pretty amazing honestly.

Theres problems in the game, I dont find this to be one of them.

But yeah she's gonna be half useless in a third game. I know they're gonna continue this series. But if I'm not playing as ellie I'd rather not

Her losing her fingers are the consequences of revenge. If she just let it go she would have still had her fingers. The same can be said for Abby, if her and her friends never killed Joel they never would have died and Abby wouldn't have lost everything.
