PunjabFarming is huge part of the economy of the Punjab region of India. People have been farming for generations mostly on land passed down to them, and while residents in Punjab (mainly Sikhs, but also many Hindus and Muslims) don't all farm, everyone eats so everyone knows at least one farmer. Farmers were guaranteed a price for certain crops at specials markets and agricultural auctions the previous years, so a small time, simple farmer does not get taken advantage of. Farmers range high and wide on wealth, as many only have a few acres of land to farm on.
Now there are three bills introduced which will allow farmers to sell at any price. The farmers say that that means big corporations can deal with them individually, and force down the prices even more by strong arming and forcing small time farmers into lowering their prices. Also, it allows these large companies to hoard crop, which can also hurt the farmers minimum prices. Modi's government has sent police to stop protests, which is similar to the police reactions in the USA with protests. Use of tear gas and water cannons on people sitting on the street and such as well as people being kidnapped and "disappearing" and women being sexually tortured.
