my thinking was simply that the frenzy happens because there's one concentrated window of time every year that the info becomes available and is shared all over the place. it's naturally less of an event when the info is there for you to check on anytime you want, regardless of which platform is more popular.
it's the anticipation. not to mention the presentation of it. hell, you can't even access the AM stats from the app you have to be on desktop. there are things i like and dislike about spotify but as far as this campaign and their promotion of it year by year, they've done an excellent job.
