Instant classic album
Thank you Steve
the album gets better with every listen
ppl criticizing the songwriting on this album and brent's aren't really keyed in like that

what you mean by that though
both them projects songwriting lacks depth and can be quite immature imo, i still like both regardless
If you around that age or younger then sure you can vibe and relate to it but if you older it does sound abit cringe; particularly some lyrics on static and cody freestyle
But it’s fine he will improve with age

I agree with this heavily.

Huh? Let's put aside the fact that the lyrics and concepts of the songs/album are cohesive and great - songwriting is more than just the topics touched upon in songs. Structure, Melody, etc, are all amazing and far beyond his years.

im aware, and i never disputed that the actual music, as in melody, structure, instrumentation etc. was bad. in fact they are all great
but to me great songwriting is how all of those things mesh together with lyrics and concepts and to me he’s way behind in that department; and that’s what I mean when I say the songwriting lacks depth
Again If you think otherwise that’s fine as it’s ultimately personal how to relate to the lyrical content, but to me his writing ability sticks out like sore thumb compared to his melodic/instrumental talents

What’s your example of good song writing in modern R&B
only liked sunshine and helmet
at least it’s not too musically offensive…
but the way he sings makes him very hatable
mercury was sooo bad and i don’t like the bad habit outro especially when he starts singing about biscuits and gravy
What’s your example of good song writing in modern R&B
it’s a hard question because the genre has shifted so much in the last decade
what frank did with CO and Blonde are the best recent examples I can think of but that’s been 10 and 6 years respectively
tbh I actually don’t think good songwriting is THAT important in modern rnb happening atm; it’s more about a good vibe and accessibility right now; and that’s fine with me if the music is good

I hear you. What about SZA?

because immaturity is the new maturity, as far as what’s connecting with audiences
plus the structures of the songs are phenomenal

This take is ban worthy tbh

Helmet took some time to grow on me tbh but once I went out to the West Coast and listened to it, def became a hit for me
NEED vinyl. This album has more spins than anything else for me this year.
I really hope it’s coming soon

two best songs on the album for me (sunshine probably my SOTY)
I urge you to listen again or familiarize yourself with bossa nova when it comes to mercury because that song is amazing

Facts like how tf can you dislike Mercury
because immaturity is the new maturity, as far as what’s connecting with audiences

im not sure what that even means but i think i get your point;
I guess cos younger people (teens to early 20s) are the ones mostly consuming so it’s more important to connect to them lyrically; but to the detriment of depth
same way emo is predominately consumed by teens..I don’t think targeting teens and being successful makes it mature doe
But yeah I agree the structures are real step up from his demos/apollo

ok dweeb

Yh Ctrl was defo a step in the right direction actually, thats another good example but she ain’t dropped in a while aswell
Also ANTI and Lemonade (even though Rihanna and Beyonce probs didn’t write most of it) are also good examples actually
His writing reminds me of Pharrell on NERD’s early stuff
