"Even the stars think that I am superior: Personality, intelligence and belief in astrology"

The present study aim was to investigate how individual differences relate to belief in astrology. The main result showed that the higher the narcissism, perhaps surprisingly, the higher the belief in astrology. The positive association is possibly due to the self-centred worldview uniting them, though this must be examined in further research. Furthermore, cultural aspects of millennials may emphasize the uniqueness of individuals which might lead to a more egocentric view of the world, and thus relate to narcissistic traits. Further, since astrological predictions and horoscopes tend to be positively framed, this reinforces grandiose feelings and thus might appeal even more to narcissists. Note that narcissistic traits correlated with the belief that astrology is supported by science (Table 1), which leads to a speculation that narcissists may generally be more fact resistant.

Other interesting findings was that the higher the level of intelligence, the lower the belief in astrology (see Musch & Ehrenberg, 2002), as well as that agreeable people tend to report believing in astrology more. Seeing how most personality predictors were small in magnitude, this leaves room for many other variables influencing belief in astrology. Speculatively, additional predictors could be cohort-effects, educational levels, occupations, and others.

If you take this reasoning to its logical end all science and academia more broadly has to directly lead to new inventions that lead to an increase in productivity. That renders a bunch of fields useless includinf the entirety of personality and social psychology.

Also narcissism is a personality trait where in extreme cases it has a clinical diagnosis (NPD), so I guess this has a use in clinical psychology too.

However it should be noted that the sample is 87% female and conducted in the West. I'm sure that in cultures where a belief in astrology is more common this correlation wouldn't exist.

Respectfully speaking I think you're a little close-minded. Just because you don't see the point in something doesn't mean that there isn't a point and that this research is useless.

You don't see value in acquiring empirical evidence that says believing in psuedoscience is related to narcissism and lower intelligence? There's tons of avenues that research can go to explore this topic.

Maybe they find a way to determine if specific psuedosciences actually cause an increase in these outcomes? Maybe they identify different realms of psuedosciences to see if only belief in one topic has this similar correlation or if belief in all psuedosciences has this same correlation? What if at the end of all these lines of research we better understand how psuedosciences cognitively shut down the critical thinking skills that should prevent people from believing in this stuff?

Understanding how culture shapes our worldviews and how cultural phenomena can shape our worldviews (and how each culture can interact with this stuff uniquely) is absolutely not useless lol

More specific please, are we talking strictly astrology? Cause if so s*** it might be, there's countless dumb IG heaux who think it's a cool aesthetic and don't question nothing

Are we talking about spirituality or esoterica in general? Then it's a heavy disagree. For the first thing to be a big part of your life you need high emotional intelligence at least. And for the esoterica part, a lot of the stuff written on it are difficult to grasp and academic texts that do take some form of intelligence + dedication to even peek behind the veil of what's there to offer in terms of knowledge

Bruh how are you gonna agree or disagree with the results lmao. If you do you're gonna have to criticize the methods.

But it's about people who believe in astrology, but that can include people who believe in spirituality more broadly.

Same thing, these kind of studies are really irrelevant to everybody besides maybe people like the ones in your field of study but mf they ain't include me or many smart mfs i know into the equation. So it's already false by default

I could easily make the same argument for sports fans, people who enjoy fastfood, people who go to the gym etc etc

It just doesn't make sense to me given how vastly different we all are. And it doesn't matter at the end of the day either so who cares

Also i dare anybody to start doing a minor in Western Esotericism and tell me the concepts and returning motifs are easy to grasp. That's why i said, it also matters to specify who are we talking about. Because yes, i roll my eyes too when i see a random mf talk about ''oh we don't match cause i'm a scorpio'' or whatever
