this narrative to discredit the emo rap wave is so cringe.

it's okay if you don't personally like the music but y'all sound so out of touch just denying the impact they had lol

X was definitely the one who could play the new school shenanigans but actually came from the school of 2000’s artists and trying to be unique, unpredictable and 1 of 1

Pretty wild to think all his output is from like 2 years total

This is what you have to do nowadays though
Y’all forget he only blew up properly months before he died

You can’t afford to go MIA like Frank Ocean in the current climate unless you’re already massively established

Hence why I believe that overall media consumption is gonna collapse because people are gonna sick of the same stuff.

Will our generations recollect the previous decade with same fondness as the 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s or 00’s? Perhaps the first half, but there’s no denying the last four years have been culturally dry through companies pushing their marketing towards “how can we appeal to the highest number of people in these culturally sensitive times?”

It’s like you HAVE to partake in it because that’s how it’s advertised. Bro you’re not listening to the new Drake? Bro he’s just the man because omg he just wins he does numbers bro. While watching the latest Star Wars movie with their cast of #relatablebecausetheyhaveablackguyandaasiangirlthathaveNOTHINGtodowiththeplot and #epicquotableoneliners and god forbid you have an OPINION because the numbers are STRAIGHT FACTS‼️😤 How many movie trailer cliches have we wrung our dry? It’s like we’ve accepted this formula that we just have these companies cater our tastes for us at the cost of any individualism or artistic integrity. You don’t like the popular thing I like? >:( Well now I’m gonna make all of these assumptions based on the information I know about you to make my thing more superior.

F*** X. F*** this b***oo ass pandering that doesn’t amount to anything significant other than “i am emotionally distressed, but i’m better than you because i have the latest and greatest in materialism.” How the f*** is anyone ‘unique’ and ‘fresh’ when they’re all buying the same s*** and acting like they’re the man all because someone else they know did it and that brought them attention. The figurehead of a generation is someone who makes 2 minute long songs on half baked projects that open with “I’m gonna be talking about REAL S*** and so if you can’t take it just turn this off because you won’t understand.” Tears for Fears showed sincerity and compassion to being vulnerable and overcoming trauma. Nirvana showed the suppressed angst of a generation that was neglected and forced to meet absurd expectations from their parents. Kanye showed that you could do anything if you believed in yourself no matter what and to not let those judge you. X? Xxxtentacion showed that your problems are serious and that everyone is against you so F*** THEM!!!1!!1! I just wan die I can’t go on

Outside of Kendrick, what is our generation’s artist? I’d say Kendrick for promoting self love and engaging the African American community to express themselves and to respect everyone including oneself, but I’m sure b***oo cry baby ‘I’m not willing to go through my problems because the only person I trust is my mom’ certainly shaped a generation of egotistical consumerism.

    K I’m done b****in.

this literally makes no sense bro

"he only made music so people would listen to it"

Why would any artist of anything create with the intent of consumerism? You can be a popular music artist in the top #100 and still make music that YOU the artist want to hear. Does artist paint because he wants other people to judge it and like it? Sounds like codependency. If you make anything that goes beyond your own personal enjoyment, then that’s gonna reflect how people consume and enjoy it. Did Steven Spielberg make critically acclaimed movies because he wanted a lot of people to like them? No he made f***ing movies because he wanted to make movies.

The SoundCloud generation is purely consumerism and a means of following trends as oppose to innovating. Oh s*** here comes another LOUD BASS DRILL DRUM TRACK WITH IGNORANT VOCALS OOOOOOOOOOOOSHIT

  • Nov 29, 2020

You definitely need some degree of substance. Aesthetic over everything is how you end up anonymous in a lofi study beats playlist, though having music people can vibe to broadens the reach of your work.

But being a memorable artist also involves a certain level of personality and charisma. You are, to some degree, always selling yourself. So all of these things are valuable to some extent.

I read through this a little and I think you need some help talking your problems out. You're assessment of why people like Drake or Star Wars simply because they do numbers and you think they liked Disney's political agenda are wrong with the slightest amount of scrutiny. To keep it simple you can't just look at people as mindless drones that do what they're told. They have taste just like you but favor different things. Have you ever considered people like Drake because they actually just do for various reasons? He has over 10 projects to choose from. Star Wars has been a phenomenon for 40 years so there's way more to it than just #relatablebecausetheyhaveablackguyandaasiangirlthathaveNOTHINGtodowiththeplot or however you want to put it. They have their reasons just as you do for what you like and they're just as valid.

Another thing I want to add is that Star Wars is older than both Tears For Fears and Nirvana so I'd say it's love is even more real because it's had more time to be enjoyed by newer generations that's just something I wanted to remind you

Hate to burst your bubbles, but aesthetics is an inherent part of what we see as ‘substance’

No work of art is merely a skeleton of technique or “quality”; aesthetics and style inform the emotions conveyed in every movie, every song, and every Netflix show we binge

Now, can substance be a little lacking in works that seem to only flash their aesthetics? Yes, however; aesthetics - in any artistic medium - is the lens through which substance is conveyed in the first place. And if the aesthetic is lacking...the substance will be brought down too, no matter how much of it there appears to be

Hell you could say voices have an aesthetic, beats have an aesthetic - let’s not act like it’s just a visual concept. As much substance as Pac/Kendrick/Hov’s greatest verses have, there’s no denying their style is a major component of why what they say registers so strongly

I see aesthetics as how the what is done rather than a separate and less important what all together, they shouldn’t be pit against each other
