It's also important to note that OVO isn't OVO Sound. OVO Sound is under Warner Music and that's the label all of Drake's artists are signed to. OVO was set up exclusively for Drake's deal with Republic/Universal. Taylor Swift did something similar with her deal where all her new music from Lover is under Taylor Swift Music which is under Republic/Universal.

Oops I did get that mixed up. But yeah, I was gonna say, the same applies with Taylor who also works with Republic but owns the masters to her present music.

Omg I hope he doesn’t get sabotaged or harmed 😞

Michael owned his own masters and they destroyed his legacy :/

    I’m sure he’ll be fine

OVO own the licensing of his new music. The rights to licensing is masters.

As you can see in the picture OVO Records gave exclusive license to Republic Records.

Basically Drake owns it, but let Republic have rights to it as he works with them.

All his releases prior to 2019 were owned/licensed by Young Money. Go to any of his pre-2019 albums on Spotify.

    Nice. Thanks for the explanation.

Interested to see if Taylor can carry her career into the next decade

Care Package was released under OVO, too. I think that was his first project under the new deal but publications mistook it for OVO Sound.

    Aren’t you scared ?

Usually big artists that go this route end up getting blackballed or worse

I hope nothing bad happens to Drake 😔

She shouldn't have any issues. She might not score hits as well as he used to and her first week numbers might continue to dip, but she still has a loyal and dedicated fanbase and she's a touring force. She's set for life.

Yep. So Far Gone re-issue was his last release under Young Money.

    Ever since:
    Care Package
The Best in the World Pack
    Behind Barz
    Toosie Slide

All are assigned to OVO, and have no affiliation with Young Money.

So this essentially means that he owns it but is choosing to give them a piece of the pie in exchange for marketing, promotion, radio push, etc.? That kind of thing?

  • Even Chris Brown did something similar. Him and RCA worked out a similar deal. All his albums from Indigo henceforth will be under Chris Brown Entertainment, LLC., under exclusive license to RCA Records. He owns his masters from Indigo henceforth.

I do, lol. I don't think they're that committed to getting Drake out of here just yet.

Yeah. He's not a completely independent artist, it's similar to Taylor Swift, who with her new album works with Republic, but now owns the masters. Everything has to get approved by her first, she gets final say, she approves whether TV shows/movies can license her music (not the label), etc.

Basically they are the boss of their music now and earn more for every sale/stream.

Yup. I got my confirmation on Care Package and then he confirmed it again in the Rap Radar Podcast interview. I'm happy for him. I wonder if he can work out a deal to get his masters back. I know he renegotiated a couple times throughout the last decade. I'd be surprised if talk of him getting back his masters for all those albums/mixtapes never came up.

  • Drake will really eat off this song if it does well. He's the only credited writer and Oz is the only credited producer. It's also under his new label deal.

  • This been on repeat. S*** is so catchy

Wait so Drake is basically an independent artist with a licensing partnership now?

I honestly didn’t hate the song. Didn’t love it, but thought it was a little catchy.

However, this is the first time ever that I watched a music video and the music video made me hate the song.
