I wanted to make this thread as I've been obsessed with this project again recently, and everytime I go through one of these phases and the deeper into punk I go I'm more convinced this is just the single greatest punk album ever made in my eyes. Not thrash metal or skate punk but all of punk. The more s*** I listen to, the more I love this work and how it was able to execute its sound so much more profoundly and creatively than any of their contemporaries. For 12 songs 28 minutes, it's insane energy, passionate, demented thrash perfection with not even a single second wasted.
Every piece of the band is at their peak. Muir's vocals (on here ONLY) are just the best punk vocals ever. Point blank. Only ppl that come close are Darby Crash and HR. And makes bands like Dead Kennedys and Black Flag kinda unlistenable to me because they sound so corny and forced compared to Muir's twisted, impassioned ranting and screaming (I mean just listen to the intro to the album). Amery Smith's drumming on here is ridiculous as f***, I don't even have words. And I'm finding it hard to put into words just how well it pairs with Grant's thrash shredding and Louiche's amazing basslines. The chemistry and energy they have on here is unmatched, and I think they even knew it themselves cus they would later reform this lineup with a new vocalist in the 2000s.
Unfortunately, this was definitely a 'lightning in a bottle' situation cus for whatever reason, Mike Muir's ego would constantly keep changing the lineup and sound for ST and just about every single release after this first album was god damn TRASH. Seriously unlistenable s***. They even tried to "re-record" this album like two decades later and you can imagine how gutter trash level that is. But this album is absolute perfection beginning to end and Suicidal Tendencies as a creative project was worth it for this album alone.
Anyone that likes punk or aggressive music at all needs to hear this. Essential listen. And at 28 mins it's short enough to give the whole thing a shot in one go. All the songs are excellent but it works so well as a cohesive, well-sequenced project. Also this project doesn't suffer the horrible sound quality/mixing that older punk projects usually have. It sounds excellent from a clarity/mixing standpoint.
i shot the devil is one of the greatest songs period
Absolutely perfect song man. I must have nearly 1000 plays on it alone.
In trying to find a good quality of the cover to embed, I stumbled on the original shot which is kinda blowing my mind
