Melee can be played nearly lagless online with a community made rollback netcode mod. There has never been an easier time to get into the game as well as rapidly improve due to the endless resources for new players.
Slippi just launched early access for ranked matchmaking! It requires a $5 a month subscription for the next 3 months, and then it will fully launch for all players.

played Fox when I first started playing competitive, played Sheik the last time I grinded Melee, but it's been over a year now. will still go back to Sheik tho

Hard to say Zain is for sure #1. Both him, Hbox and IBDW have won 3 tournaments each IIRC.
And with many tournaments left this year things could change.

i think zain still has the best argument for #1 since he won one of the 2 most important majors of the year from winners, and then 2 more majors. hbox and ibdw tourney wins are just a hair less prestigious
really all razor thin rn especially with mango playing what looks like the best in like 4 years lmao
