Welcome to Synthworks Volume 4, that's right. Holy cow....and who is dropping tonight for this series?
I went through a few names but I decided on this man because he was well deserved. I'm not sure how many people know him but there is a good chance if you follow ropeadope records at all, you might have picked up his debut. Then again, maybe you didn’t pick up his debut & instead you were watching Karate Kid III on cable, Jesus Christ.
He started out as a talented trombonist graduating to a conservatory in NYC. He then co-founded a group called “Erimaj”. Freelancing studio & performance sessions with Bilal, Esperanza Spalding, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Glen Hansard, Mos Def, Gil-Scott Heron, D.J. Premiere, ATrak, Doc Daneeka, Nick Hook, José James, Bilal, Mary J. Blige, Hercules and Love Affair, Mark Ronson, Maria Daulne (Zap Mama), Lauryn Hill.
The first thing we notice about Corey King is his hypnotizing voice over a quiet atmospheric guitars. The 2nd thing you notice "I can only understand a few words" If you have a hard time with lyrics and aren't english speaking, we are in the same boat, fam. Anything after 5 letters, I have to run to lyric transcripts. The 3rd thing we notice is the beautiful use of space & melodic ambience.
"Lashes" is kinda teetering with the guitar soundscapes & live rhythm section more than the 2nd which is basically all synthesizer & programming. There is very little trombone
Corey King seems to be an artist who does what he wants and he doesn't care if he doesnt get a music executive to co-sign him. You can tell a lot about a recording artist of who he signs his project to.
There are some interesting guitar changes on this supplied by the guitarists on a few tracks. And there's a nice rhythm section on the first record. Corey seems to be int he driving seat with the synths/keyboards on this lp.
"A Loveless Sunken Sun" is more electronic based & a song cycle about losing someone and the birth of his son. This one really shows us another side of Corey. The guitars are gone and the synths are lined up. It's more program beat oriented and lots of great layering to be found on this one.
I can't wait to hear what he does next. Mr King is following.a tradition of many great artist's with the last name King. I hope he keeps his adventurous spirit, this is what his fans want to hear from him.
There are many song's i could've included as samples. But you faithful listener will discover them and see for yourself if Corey is for you.
haunting, a word used by so many audiophile's. But apt for whatever direction he’s headed
