Honestly, I like to keep it simple.

I record at -12db then from there

Put a limiter on the MP3 track

Compressor -> EQ - Reverb -> and maybe another personal effect depending on the song like a spreader

Now mixing with an MP3 can be difficult, but it’s what most people do today.

What I like to do is while I’m mixing, I’ll have my compressor open and within there I will work with a “threshold” between 2-3.5:1 ratio, I’ll put the “Knee” at like 0.4 and “Attack” at 0. I’ll have “makeup” at about 5 and “release” at about 50.

Most of my mixing happens in the compressor tbh, so from there I’ll look at my compressor and I’m pretty much just trying to “cut” my vocal so it stays in a between -10 to -5 on my meter in my compressor. This can be done by adjusting the threshold until the meter falls within the range I said.

After that, I pretty much just start EQ, where tbh, I just use presets and adjust from there until I like it. The more you cut from it or turn up the right side, the less or more high frequency sounds you have. The more you cut or turn up from the left, the less or more low frequency sounds you have.

The more you cut or turn up from the middle, the less or more mid frequencies you have. Nipsey liked to turn this up because he liked to sit on top of the beat. This might be where you solve your issue a little bit, but not completely. Try cutting the middle of your vocal in an EQ and see how that affects it.

It’s a lot, but the more you keep practicing and watching videos, the more you’ll learn and get a work flow. I am still far from knowing anything, but that’s just what I do to keep it quick, simple and sounding well enough.
