Charli potentially wrote sympathy is a knife about Charli's insecurities being around Taylor and being compared to her. It's not even criticizing Taylor if that's who the song's about (Charli said it's not apparently).

But that's it. There's nothing else significant that we know about. But we all know Taylor will take anything she can turn into drama and run with it if she thinks it'll make her look good soooo

Whenever stuff like this happens, I always wish I could transport to the alternate reality where the roles are reversed. Like if Taylor said "don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show" etc. and the world decided it was directed at Charli, what would the reception be. If Charli then decided to feel a way and respond in a song, what would the reception be. What if, what if.

If the song was the exact same, Charli probably wouldn't respond (just how she prob won't respond to whatever this s\*\*\* may be lol). Because the song wouldn't have been about Charli, it was about the way Charli made Taylor feel due to their status and public attention. Sympathy is a Knife is not about the person Charli is talking about. It's about Charli.
