When I said earlier this week that this is giving me a bad stomach feeling, I was right.
I just... don't think this album had to be made. So much of it feels redundant or reheated when there was absolutely zero pressure to do anything this year. Hearing it makes her explanation about how important it was that these twelve songs stand unified as a fully body of work sound absolutely laughable. I don't even think she needs to really switch it up - because she won't anyway - but I do genuinely think that it's time for a genuine break. Like, yeah, of course there's zero commercial consequence to her releasing slop, but I would imagine at least some of this would be hitting better if we had time to miss what she does. As it is, this feels like boiling over point for this ridiculously dense release schedule she's had for the last five years. I'm really curious to see if other publications follow The Guardian's lead. Five full new albums and four re-issues in five years. Hang it up, girl.
