it's so funny seeing people up in arms about this woman, or any artist that

    a. records and releases music frequently, like that's some foreign concept

    b. gets recognition for their efforts

idk maybe cause some of my favorite artists release just as regularly, i'm not crying about Taylor being "shoved down our throats" or whatever other BS. i tune in when i want, and i don't when i don't lol. people be acting like Taylor is directly harming them or affecting their daily lives just for doing her job. lowkey pathetic

  • Feb 5, 2024

anyway her pen better have been at its PEAK on these songs for her to title the album like this

I actually agree with most of this. She makes very good pop music and her output is absolutely insane. I wish she had a little quality control (16 tracks lmaooo) over her albums, but it's insane that she can put out this many albums in such a short time each with really significant pop bangers in the zeitgeist.

Her album title being a petty pissy taunt to her ex is the kind of stuff that makes me frustrated though. Same with her constant desire to be in the limelight when it comes to her private life. She went years living privately and avoiding that kind of attention after criticizing the people who watch her every step, just to go RIGHT back into it as soon as she needs some more attention.

I think a lot of people are tired of a grown ass woman being so childish and needy of fame when she's literally already the most famous musician working today potentially. It's always been cringe, but the older she gets the more exhausting it is to see it get repeated so often (especially after Folklore and Evermore kind of proved all of that s*** is wholly unnecessary to her career)

    a non-biased, clear post i can respect.

i don't quite get the whole reaction to her album title being connected to her ex or whatever, IF that's the only meaning behind it by the way. cause the artist herself hasn't assigned that. but she's writing about her life so i'm just like? what is she to do lol. i think it's an intriguing title and connection to her personal life through writing that fans of music would be excited about. but idk, maybe it's the "pretentiousness" of it or whatever

idk i can't speak on the need for attention and fame cause when you're that big, is it even escapable at that point? we can list different pop stars of similar magnitude that we think are comparable and were able to get away with being a little more lowkey than she is without sacrificing their stardom, but then when we look at it closer i think we'd be able to point to certain factors that just make the situations differ.

    The Tortured Man Club
    The Tortured Poet Department

Doesn't get more clearcut than that lol.

And to your last point, it IS escapable. She's escaped it before successfully for years. She went out of the limelight in 2016-2018, as well as during Folklore and Evermore. Those last two albums had basically zero controversy or stirring any pot attributed to the art and were able to stand on themselves, and she was still able to make bank and do awesome performance art. She lost zero stardom, dated a dude privately for 6 years, and the narrative surrounding her (for once) was about the music she was making and not the stunts in the media she was pulling. You could argue things have changed post-COVID/Eras Tour, but more of this than people think is all strategic.

As soon as her and Alwyn broke up, she went back to using tabloids, hook-ups, and whatever else she can to get publicity - and it's working because it's always worked. But it's not necessary for her career as she proved only a few years ago, and it honestly cheapens her legacy/image to a lot of people to see someone her age and with her success stoop to the same levels as something out of Degrassi. The "rumors" following her posted by reliable publications aren't doing a lot of that without her permission. She fuels it. That's why I think a good chunk of reasonable people and music fans detest her so much. She does it to herself. (Then there's people who hate her for the wrong reasons, but I'm not talking about them).

it's tough to have these types of convos on here because it just kinda ends up going in circles, which is why i haven't really done it in a while lol. we're aware of all the same information that you wrote here tho for sure

do you believe "reasonable" people "detest" all the other pop stars that use pop star tactics to promote themselves?

Idk, but look at the Lil Nas X thread and see the kind of s*** people say about him for stirring the pot. And, if anything, it's just fun and games. The guy is meme-iing. And that's less annoying to me than someone milking their actual personal life for that stuff. But people still try to say he's not a real artist, he's immature, etc.

I think there's a lot of "reasonable" people who don't want to participate in the drama of artists, and when Taylor makes her music inseparable from that drama, they rightfully check out. Write about your life, write it into your art, but doing petty slights that have the tonal subtlety of basically explicitly name-dropping is not it chief.

If she really dated Joe Alwyn for 6 years, for example, this kind of pettiness IRL from a normal person would be embarrassing. Can't imagine what it must be like for him to go that long without any kind of public trashing to just get heaped on as soon as that ends.

Because it's Taylor, she can feign behind the whole "my whole life is scrutinized so stop looking so much into it" - meanwhile her entire career and fan community is structured around teases/hints/clues/ARG's/"nothing is an accident"

i feel like we want records about real life s*** that resonates with us and we can connect to, but don't want to allow the artists the space they need to do just that. it's a tough game they're playing!

she literally could've named this s*** "Joe" like Robin Thicke did with his "Paula" divorce album. at least this might be something a bit more clever and cunning lmao she's a WRITER i just don't get it mannn

but i really do appreciate your responses specifically, forreal

Robin Thicke naming his album Paula is exactly the dumbass kind of on-the-nose thing that would make people check out from his music. It's not cool there, just like her album title here is cringe.

I'm just saying that people doing it with Taylor doesn't make them misogynistic/ridiculous. There are tons of people who hate her from wrong reasons, but not everyone who rolls their eyes at her tabloids and her crutches is someone "out to get" her or not letting her do her thing. If she's a writer (or a poet lmao), I'd hope she could come up with something better.

that's probably where we differ, i'm not necessarily looking for "cool" just the artist's expression. If "Paula" is what captured what he needed, works for me lol

pls don't make people scroll by and think we were talking about something we weren't tho lmao misogyny was never the topic

I wasn't saying we were talking about misogyny. I'm saying that people mad at her for doing her job and making music/staying in the public light are kind of ridiculous.

But people mad that she can't seem to do that without resulting to the same kind of petty/on-the-nose tricks can be justified in their annoyance.

I like her music a lot. I'd like her music a lot more if it wasn't constantly bombarded and surrounded by cringe tabloids (and if the songs themselves sometimes didn't directly BECOME that lol)
