Sorry if this is kinda long but I fr need help here

Recently my Samsung laptop crapped out after an update. I got it as a freshman in HS and have had it since. I’m a Junior in College now. After taking it to the store it was determined that the hard drive is shot. They quoted me $100 not an unfair price imo.

My family are pushing me to just get a new one so I’ve been doing research in the $120-$350 range and honestly it’s all ass. This MS S mode s*** sounds terrible and it seems that laptop quality at this range is not that great.

TLDR: is it worth it to just fix my lap top or risk upgrading to a possibly worse situation.

Side not: the tech sxn is kinda dead so I’m posting here too

You'll only get a chromebook for that price range which isn't bad. I got through an entire chemistry degree with one, just using google docs and remote accessing my Desktop at home if I needed it.

If you need whatever setup you have on your samsung then I'd go for the repair, $100 is light for a guarantee they'll get it working again

The Lenovo Thinkpad 13 chromebook has been good to me for years now. Many more options have come out since then, but I've had devices from Acer, Toshiba, and Google (phones) and always satisfied with what I get for the money.

    Check out this tool

Lots of good hardware in your price range.

well if you do make sure Its a Solid State Drive (SSD)
as opposed to a Hard Drive cause that s***s ancient technology now

Personally I have an affinity to the Microsoft Surface Pro laptops they're really thin and light can get some decent performance

Reason I like the tablet-style is because I don't need to carry notebooks and s*** just write them on OneNote using the surface pen

especially if you dont plan on doing anytihng demanding I think Surface Go could work out

they are pretty pricey tho and no room for aftermarket upgrades

See if they gonna replace with an ssd or not

if you lf a new laptop I would say the choices start to get really interesting at $500-$600 range

It worked lol never really had any issues with it after 4+ years. More or less it just gave out on me rather than broke

if the alternative is a $120-$350 new laptop i say it’s worth to put a new ssd in instead

also do it yourself and save $50, swapping out a hard drive on a laptop is super easy all you need is a small plus screwdriver

Is $350 the highest you can go? If so just get a new hard drive for cheap. No point in wasting money on a subpar laptop when you already have one that just needs a hard drive.

If you can spend like $500 get a Thinkpad.

you can download & install windows 10 for free, just need another computer & an 8gb usb drive

    howtogeek.com/244678/you-dont-need-a-product-key-to-install-and-use-windows-10

unactivated windows’s restrictions can be bypassed pretty easily w/ google search, alternatively i know of a semi-sketchy program that activates windows for free

    This is ez.

Only thing I wonder is why only $100 for the fix?

What will they fix? Seems like a good deal imo.

Unless they're giving you a 5400rpm 250gb hdd or something

    Cuz a 1TB SSD is about $100...

If they're hooking you up with a new drive they are gonna need a new Windows OS, which would cost you $150+, assuming they're gonna give you at least a decent hard drive.

Or maybe they aren't up charging that much for labor. Or maybe that doesn't include the OS.

idk, but if the HDD is more than 500gb and/or an SSD, I'd just pay $100 for the s*** to be back to normal

  • Feb 25, 2020

With that budget you get it fixed. There are windows activation keys sold very cheap on site like ebay. Like $5. I say do that

But is it a s***ty mechanical HDD with 5400rpm?

I guess even 250gb ssd would be a good deal too considering they got you with windows
