For all the ladies, R&B has always focused on that demographic. The tugging of emotions, sentimentality, and drama. Those 3 factors have always been qualities that have enticed and cultivated the audience for years. We have always witnessed the heterosexual perspective (Man to Woman, Woman to Man), but what happens when that viewpoint is flipped on its head? What if it's from the perspective of a woman to another woman? It's a concept, that even back in the liberating 70s was a bit taboo.
Repping from Durham, North Carolina. Teresa grew up singing Gospel at church b4 eventually venturing to secular music. She started out at as a singer for the group, Ed's Bush Band and for other groups in the early 70s. When she moved to NYC, her career started to grow to new heights. She was scouted out by a women's music label known as Olivia Records. The company heard one of her demo tapes and the rest is history. She dropped a few albums for the label and subsisary, Second Wave, between the late 70s and early 80s. Trull decided to part ways after wanting to spread her wings and openly work with men. A suggestion that the label was strongly against.
Teresa Trull's music has that old school auntie, Sunday afternoon pumpkin pie atmosphere. Almost very rural sounding to a fault. This possibly harkens back to her familial farming roots. She has a commanding yet swifty voice that evokes the passion. As aforementioned earlier, her subject matter pertaining to women is very interesting. It feels very intimate and personal rather than sexual. Which gives her records an even more natural, homely appeal.
A pioneer in not only in Women's music but Queer R&B as well, it's no wonder that the songstress continues to be recognized in a world that is now accepting of LGBTQ communities. She set the stage for a range of artists who have been ignored due to their sexuality. A sense of female empowerment and liberation is felt throughout her from top to bottom.
Happy Women's History Month to all the ladies in the world! Also, special shout to all LGBTQ.
