my issue with the whole opium narcissism thing is it isn’t subversive nor an artistic statement

we already live in a narcissistic and individualistic culture. in the 70s and 80s those metal bands were subverting a culture which by and large was conservative, at least much more than ours now: at least going into dark themes meant an exploration of the shadow and shining a light on something repressed

what carti does now is shine a light on the persona. he performs to a point where even his subversion is pure simulacra. he has a base of terrible behaviour towards his son and women, yet he doesn’t explore the why, he just fixates on it’s manifestation and amplified it
