Suffered from the pop rap era but still some incredible tracks on here. Has a debut been topped commercially since this? All I know is niggas knew he was a force by the time this was done

Nah this didn’t suffer at all. This is one of the best pop rap albums ever

But yeah he was outta here once that MTV special dropped with the airplane with his face on it

I’m sure it’s outdated and corny but the nostalgia is too strong with this 1

    Classic to me idc

Only idiots see it as a disappointment.

The context of the time was any debut that wasn’t received like Illmatic or The College Dropout would be considered a disappointment. There was a desire for one of the new rappers to make a critically acclaimed “classic” out the gate.

I loved TML so much personally. But after the artistic triumph of So Far Gone, as a whole project TML was a slight disappointment. Take Care was what people wanted, and I think even Drake was conscious with making Take Care a return to form, a return to the magic of SFG

I always found it insane we call this album a disappointment its literally everything u could want from a mainstream debut

People were waiting for a more cohesive debut in this era. There was fatigue of mixtape rappers having to compromise for pop rap debuts. Take Care was what people actually wanted and wouldn’t have been as disappointing. TML is an amazing debut for what it is tho

Suuuuper underrated project IMO, always feel nostalgic listening back to it

Like MJP, my formal introduction to Drake and at a time where I was becoming a fan of hip-hop and R&B so holds a special place for me, despite it not being my favourite project of his.

Agreed but it has aged incredibly well. Some of the best music Drake made from 2009-2011 is on this album.

This project was my formal introduction to Drake. I was thirteen years old, Over was playing all the time on the radio and my mom went and got the CD from Walmart. I took it from her and burned it onto my Xbox and this would be the only thing I listened to as I played. Funny thing about the CD was that it was the clean version but misprinted because Over was uncensored lmao

But yeah even though this isn’t my favorite Drake project, it’s the one that started it all for me. It is even the project that made me go deeper into Hip-Hop & R&B and made me a fan of those genres. For that this album will always hold a special place for me.

    Love hearing stories like this

Agreed, the opening 3 tracks is probably my favorite Drake music and moment. Fireworks, Karaoke and The Resistance are all top 10 or 20 Drake songs for me

Huge nostalgia factor with this album for me, man...

I remember being 18 years old, in love with a girl I knew I had no future with, stuck in college with no clear future in mind career wise. Summer vacation in full swing, nothing smart to do all day & listening to this for the first time on a cool summer night, windows down in my room, looking at the city lights in the distance.

Album hit harder than anything I've ever heard by that point in my life, never heard anything more relatable than his tracks.

It was really special to be a fan of his since 2009 onwards, don't think anything like his first years in the game will be replicated again...
