Great listen @DonutHole Thank you πββοΈ πββοΈ π
having it come right after the extreme tenderness of disney girls only accentuates those negative (imo) qualities too
I still don't get what Disney's girl is about
Ithaka linked a story about someone witnessing a shooting but I still don't get it π

i just always took it as a song about nostalgia and wanting to escape back to childlike innocence and peaceful times. (also relevant for the time/rest of the album with the social unrest/war stuff going on). lots of references to things that make me think of an older time ( older than 1971) in the USA with specifically American cultural references. Patti Page, summer days and trips from youth, disney, bingo (lol), old time dances, telling his parents he's in love. and Bruce Johnston was 14-15 in 1957, not sure why that specific year in the title though. i think its really effective creating a fantasy image of that impossible dreamlike world. the musical backing is also perfect for this, i especially love the intro with the acoustic guitars (almost sounds mandolin-like with how its played i think?) and the wah-wah sounding synth
Bruce's best moment with the beach boys except maybe his harmony vocal in the outro of God Only Knows.
i didn't know that back story Ithaka mentioned but it fits along with the theme of wanting to escape the unpleasant realities that you learn as you grow older. would be interesting if that specific event was the reason for the 1957 in the title

just the title threw me off
I expected it to be about Cinderella and s*** π πππππππππ
techno??? yeah i actually disagree that its ahead of its time just think its an amazing song

i guess it actually kinda is just not naming them
also the parallel of the girl in the song as that perfect image like a disney princess. lyrics and song might be a bit too saccharine for some (like the tootsie roll line) but i dont mind
I still don't get what Disney's girl is about

bruce losing his innocent witnessing a ruthless murder - disney reminding him of the times before that when he still had the innocence, since the year in the song title

doesnt sound remotely like techno, but i think ithakas probably using the term in the commonly used incorrect sense to describe a broader sort of electronic music
this is techno
but yeah for surf's up album to be groundbreaking for synths it comes a little late in the game, even for synths used in that same pop/rock context. it fit in with a sound that was already being adopted by a decent amount of artists in the time period. (and its done well on surfs up imo)

So the beach Boys weren't VERY ahead of their time with synths
Beach Boys let me down
