one of my favorite left out songs: “sandy” is an original brian song with russ titelman which he cut the instrumental for in 1965 during the “summer days and summer nights” album sessions, two takes, one titled “sandy” and the other “sandy she needs me” to which great unfortunate no lead vocals done for it, a crime.. lost gem - on the back cover of summer days n summer nights brian mentions a story of dennis who had fallen asleep in his car the day he had a lead vocal to do: could it be for sandy?

skip to august 21, 1976 shortly before the love you sessions brian decides to retrieve the track, renames it “sherry she needs me” and record some lead vocals on it once and for all and the result is a must heard! while we’re used to the rough brian vocals from that era, and there leads us to believe his falsetto was gone - it wasn’t, like i’ve stated before he exercised to get rid of it as it got out of fashion in that era but if you listen to this, he goes way beautifully way back into hitting those falsetto notes, this is my ultimate version and why im doing this post in the first place at all

good time from sunflower, 1969 was used for love you and untouched, feels like something is connected there.. brian seems like he had the intention to use an older song, i would’ve taken sherry instead, i like it better and it has newer vocals

the re-recorded song didn’t end up on love you either way, it was considered in an early tracklisting for “adult/child” the follow up to love you but as we know the album never saw the light of the day unfortunately...

in 1978 mike love jumped on it and did a s*** ass remake of it naming it “tricia” for his solo album “first love”, not gonna say much about it or even embed it.. but if you’re curious for it, here’s a bootleg

apparently titelman took another shot at it with brian in 1988 for brians first solo album, renaming it this time “terry she needs me”, it sure if they did record it, there’s not bootlegs of it sadly

but brian did finish this song for his 1998 “imagination” album tho with lyrics modified by carole bayer sager and hey i fw it 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

the “sherry she needs me” track aka 1976 brian vocals over the 1965 instrumental cut was finally released in 2013 on the big boxset “made in california” but remixed, not a fan of the added echo on the vocals
