This documentery, "Billie". This is the most insight i've ever had into her life and a truly incredible documentary. This sheds a truer light onto the scene than other documentaries that features some of the same characters which I thought were acurate representations like in Bob Dylan's No Direction Home where they painted John Hammond as an allie to the struggle against racism, the doc shows testimonies that he fired Billie for not playing the blues stereotype they wanted from her.
It goes in depth with her masochistic "love" life. It's built up around the story of a woman named Linda Lipnack who was writing an exposé about Billie's life and her demise, this woman wound up dead on the streets of washington in 1978, after being threatened over her poking and proding. Her recordings of interviews are in the doc and it also is tied with an intimate relationship the author had with Count Basie! that arised from her work on the book. An important documentary, a must watch.
