I get why ppl outside of cali might think it’s overrated. The way ppl talk about in n out you would think it’s some gourmet fine dining type burger when it’s really just fast food. also ppl always comparing in n out to shake shack def doesn’t help especially when you’re supposed compare in n out to something like a McDonald’s burger. It makes more sense.

I’m not saying shake shack is better than in n out I’m saying that comparison doesn’t make sense at all. completely diff price range, diff type of burger, diff type of restaurant. Even five guys comparison doesn’t make sense. You compare five guys to shake shack. You compare in n out to McDonald’s, Burger King and Carl’s jr, and that’s what makes in n out so goat. You’re paying mcd prices and getting a much better quality burger.
If your burger spot doesn’t have a drive thru don’t compare it to in n out imo
like if you want a fire burger don’t go to in n out and go to an actual burger joint.
If you want a fire FAST FOOD burger tho.. it’s gonna be hard to beat in n out.

A lot of people recommend Solvang but I absolutely did not f*** with the vibe when I visited for a couple days a few years ago
Santa Barbara is cool though, pretty close to LA. Also Santa Cruz if you’re trying to go up north again
