this is no disrespect to the guy who made the mashups because its not on him but wow it's insane how much worse "Collard Greens" sounds over the "Surround Sound" beat while the other way around sounds great

not to be dusty but we need to retvrn

nah bro no way a mashup sounds worse than the original beat

  • Dec 30, 2024

I think Q's flow on collard greens would only sound good on that beat lol

There's been some amazing production the last few years, holding one of the best of the blog era to a random one from today's era isn't fair

Niggas 25+ feel like trap drums the cheat code to being young lmaoo

Was just saying this same s*** in the thread breaking down Worst Behavior by Dahi, niggas dumbed down the direction that mainstream rap beats were going. Most beats like this (trap hi hats / typical trap drum setup) could have come out any time since 2016. Think j cole and 21 savage a lot. Its basically this same type of beat with a diff sample style

Hard to even have this convo when the basis of comparison & contrast is collard greens because that was a bonkers beat 10 years ago. Like what even is it what sounds like that what were they going for (in a good way)

Producers share the same 2 drum packs nowadays that’s why

  • Dec 30, 2024

I think you have tunnel vision you are generalizing all this based off these two songs. There’s plenty of great production these days that would blow someone’s mind back then, it’s just we’re so accustomed to having great producers and mid rappers now

  • Dec 30, 2024

Out of all the examples you could’ve went with for boring production these days you picked JID?

its kinda an extreme example maybe but the fact that a song with a beat like that was the lead single for Q's major label debut says something about the state of production

I do think the proliferation of sample/loop makers and their inseparable relationships to a lot of the bigger producers ended up neutralising the sound of mainstream rap for a little bit.

Their existence was born out of sample clearing being an expensive and annoying process, but it ended up creating a bunch of producers who work with these sample makers, import their loops and add drums. Valid way to work (has lead to some of my fav beats) that shouldn’t be laughed at or looked down upon, but I think it ended up with a lot of samey beats and producers with less technical prowess (again, a fine and not bad thing)

  • Dec 30, 2024

Just slow down the Surround Sound vocals to match the beat.

Especially considering trap beats became more watered down when s*** became mainstream, compared to like pre-2017 stuff

Feel like there are still great beats and new sounds today

Sure a lot of rap sounds the same as in 2018 but we still have new faces and sounds

  • Dec 30, 2024

    Forgot this:

  • Dec 31, 2024

2018 was the turning point where the beats on every mainstream project suddenly sounded like garbage. I really don't know how it happened so quickly

I feel like the progression of hip hop for the producer is getting better, they change a lot of sounds. While the rapper is stay the same and still no progressing at all. The producer do heavy lifting for the them
