KTT'S ODE TO ONE OF 21ST'S CENTURY GREATEST RECORDS
For over 30 years, Basinski has worked with tape loops β capturing, slicing and warping the world around us on reel-to-reels. He makes field recordings from nature and shortwave radio signals, then literally cuts them up into short loops. His almost obsessively a***og-focused work is often melancholic and strained, but always beautiful. But it is The Disintegration Loops, a project he finished the morning of September 11 while living in New York, for which he's best known. The previous summer, Basinski had found an old pile of old recordings to salvage. As he digitized them, he discovered that the tapes themselves were literally falling apart; realizing the beauty in the decay, he keep the loops running. In the recording that resulted, short, melodic loops turn over in your ears as they slowly deteriorate like wood planks on abandoned houses, letting wind and silence slip through the cracks. Listen long enough, and rhythms appear and disappear.
Suffice to say that the project is the sonic representation of 9/11's aftermath. The stars were really aligned for Basinski that evening
mfs think tyler is mysterious wait till they hear this
Dlp 6 while on dmt
and the nitrous
Saw Basinski in concert a few years back at a museum. Was pretty dope
Saw him in London in 2018. He performed for 3 hours in a big cathedral. It was an IMPECCABLE experience

you think they will like merzbow?
you think they will like merzbow?
Oh most definitely
I think it works just as well outside of the 9/11 context. I like to think of it as a slow descent into mental decay, similar to The Caretaker project

For me, it captured the silence after 9/11, but it's true. I think the album is still independent from the event
Also mad respect for the caretaker. An empty bliss beyond this world was inspired by a neuroscience paper that showed how patients with Alzheimer's could recollect memories when you play them music from their youth. he's a genius
2000s really were a golden era for drone
I have this album towards the top of my favorite of the 2000s. Much more emotionally potent with the visual installation accompanying it.
melancholia is my fav basinski but this is a great project! fell asleep to it once and had a horrifying nightmare lol
