What they were doing, even before things went bad, was already extortion. It was mutually beneficial, especially initially, but once he started paying them, they were never going to let him stop without consequence. Even if they seemed somewhat cool with him at times, the payments were the only thing stopping them from getting at him and I’m sure he knew that.

Like the entire reason he got kidnapped and robbed was because there was internal beef in their gang and he cut off and stopped paying one faction. So they came to take his money and jewelry and possibly even kill him.
