I didn't find a thread for this one. Recently got around finally completing a playthrough of Morrowind and it was peak. The writing was clever, layered, cutting-edge even. I love how you gradually come to understand all the societal systems that make up the island of Vvanderfel. The plot itself is a wonderful play that might be a mostly standard hero's journey if you let it be. But delve into the politics and lore, and you will see there's so much more! Skyrim is still my favorite TES entry, but there's no denying that Morrowind is easily the best-written of the series. I would put it up with other classic RPGs around that time, such as the Fallout series (even put it above because it's so wonderfully weird).
And, hot take? The combat is kinda good? It doesn't take too long getting used to, and the actual moves you can take aren't really interesting (there's different types of attacks but once I learned about the "Always Use Best Attack" option I just turned it on and never cared). It's the research management and knowledge of the RP mechanics that make it fun. Earlier on, every battle has weight, and as a result is immensely rewarding. By the end, you are a god. You can literally kill gods if you so wish to, and Vivec is a chump lmao. Almalexia has a bunch of OP guards and put up quite a fight, I won't lie. Still killed that mf, but had to get to like 90% of my power. I be feeling like a Dragon Ball character the way I grow, it's awesome. You can do crazy s*** like traverse the entirety of the map in like a minute, flying all over it, speeding through like the flash. The limits are there to be broken.
Oh boy, the atmosphere. I will admit, the graphics haven't aged the best but idgaf about that. Gorgeous soundtrack, except for it playing the main theme as an ambient piece which is insanely distracting sometimes. Nitpick however. The mushroom towers, the oddly normal Imperial settlements, the scale of Vivec city (which is a nightmare to traverse, i hate it), the ash storms in Ald'ruhn. The vibes!!!
Love the guild mechanics in this one y'all. You do a lot of busy work, but it's never really boring the way the game is constructed. Following directions is mostly cool (I did get tired eventually since they are sometimes plain inaccurate or just not specific enough) and the journey to and fro is the fun in and of itself. It's a slow but fun process. Climbing ranks is a joy and you get cooler missions and more benefits. You come as a dirty N'wah and become a favored Outlander with enough work. The alien feel of this province is a mystery to uncover in and of itself.
Anybody wanna share some cool stories about this one?
Also, the expansions were ass lmao. I didn't even bother with the main questline for Bloodmoon, I'm not a Imperial "WHERE'S YOUR UNIFORM" Legion simp||, although the island itself was decent to explore. Tribunal is straight trash, I ||killed Almalexia once she told me to commit ecological terrorism. Crazy hoe fr.
will read this later, ive been slowly working backwards through the elder scrolls games starting with skyrim in 2020 and oblivion in 2022
couple questions for u OP:
i remember it took me a while to get adjusted to how different the UI and graphics of Oblivion were from Skyrim, how different does Morrowind play compared to Oblivion?
Oh yeah and I def prefer archery combat in these games, is it any good or will i have to be a melee/magic class to have any fun?

Bruuuuh, I worked backwards through them too lmao. Played Skyrim all the way back in like 2013, I think? 2013-2014. Oblivion after and I tried playing Morrowind too, but after 2 Skyrim and 1 Oblivion playthroughs, I was just burned out and played Deus Ex: Human Revolution instead. Now I did Morrowind and tried Daggerfall but that one is NOT for me lmao. I hope I can try ESO proper but I don't know where I will find the time to make a sub worthwhile.
Morrowind plays more differently for sure. The graphics are rather basic looking at them now and not really too bright. It's a vibe but do not expect saturated colors or anything of the sort. The faces look a bit less goofy I suppose? But still goofy lol. The UI is decent. I don't know what to tell you, you'll get used to those. It's the gameplay mechanics that take getting used to. Missing most of your attacks at the start, spending a lot of money on trainers so you can get decent enough, focusing on your major and minor skills, reading a hell of a lot more.
I played a spellsword, I cannot tell you about archery. I'm assuming you'll miss a lot of the shots in a similar manner because of how RNG accuracy is. Playing melee is similar on that end. But level up enough and you'll hit most attacks. Magic is a weird one. Offensive magic can be a hard one to get good at, I mostly used magic in general as support. It really works rather different than other games tbh. Enchanting is like magic without the magicka cost, instead a lot of items give you spells you can use up to the enchantment capacity of said item. There's constant enchantement effects too but they unlock later on. Magic as a whole is wonderful but will take some reading and practice to get right.
op how do you rank oblivion, skyrim and morrowind?
1. Skyrim
2. Morrowind
3. Oblivion
