that's different
just cause The Cure made an iconic song doesn't mean they're mainstream artists
The Police were never "really" a punk band to begin with
what about pop punk
In retrospect, I should've put I Feel It Coming instead of Despacito. But in all fairness, the Bieber remix of Despacito was a landmark moment.

The Cure aren’t the only band lmao. I’m talking Talking Heads, Blondie, Devo, Depeche Mode, The Pretenders,The Police, Tears for Fears etc.
All those acts have punk roots, and they were mainstream
yeah and mainstream emo bands like mcr
my point was the death of rock started much earlier than people realize and it was slowed because of how media controlled the culture

nah the cure definitely made it big enough to qualify as mainstream even tho they were alternative
i actually think it happened earlier
rock was done after Hendrix died but ran on fumes for a few years afterwards
that's around the time funk and disco started and england appreciated those genres better than racist ass Amerikkka
so when disco "died" in 1980, england appropriated it in a lot of their "rock" music to keep the spirit of mainstream rock going but america completely ignored it throughout the '80s, '90s, and '00s
this is why american rock bands from 1980-2010 were mostly lame as f***
"rock was done after Hendrix died but ran on fumes for a few years afterwards"
i dont fully believe that you fully believe this bro

Facts. Lovesong, Just Like Heaven, and Friday I’m In Love get constant radio rotation here on the throwback pop channels
also rock is very segmented now people don't say oh i am starting a rock band, they say oh i am starting this shoegaze band or they starting some post-hardcore band or some bullshit like that
as @op said none these bands have anything to do with each other musically because they are so different
rap is going down this same path

when "rock" was commercialized and lost its direct roots with little richard and the blues, it died because it had to take on a new form: punk
@Elric chime in
Lil Nas X is set for life thanks to Old Town Road lol, how one song can change your entire life.
would've loved to see Redbone on this
possibly Redbone over Royals and I Feel it coming over despacito

what definition are you using for the genre "dying"
cuz i really cant see how in terms of quality, popularity or originality rock died in 1971-1975 compared to like 1966-1970
i think that whole narrative about rock "NEEDING" to become punk is kinda trite and overblown tbh. lot of it just coming from dudes who think theyre cool for disliking prog and hard rock
i dont find much value in talking about genres "dying" or being dead tbh
genres dont die they just start to smell a little funny and thats ok
it might be missing the 21 pilots track ?
great beat by mike elizondo btw (produced alot for Dre, Em...)

it's more about the ambitions of the genre
after Physical Graffiti, no mainstream rock act tried to make an album that good which didn't sound like a retread
