Premise:
”The series is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy, who is part of John Brown's (Ethan Hawke) motley crew of abolitionist soldiers during the time of Bleeding Kansas, eventually participating in the famous 1859 raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Brown's raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended, but was the instigating event that started the American Civil War.“
Main Cast:
Was supposed to read this for a college I was suppose to attend. Didn’t get to attend so I dropped it. Was decent from what I could remember.
damn, what a difficult story to tell. not familiar with the book but I was always fascinated by the story of John Brown and wondered what it would be like in a movie or TV show. always thought the hardest part would be casting and tone. looks like the series was made by mostly white guys so it'll be really interesting to see how they portray Brown as a hero without him being a cliche white savior
the trailer hooked me but also left me a bit skeptical. Ethan Hawke is a great actor and with a good enough script he could pull this off. Daveed Diggs stole the show in Hamilton but was atrocious in Snowpiercer. I'm not convinced he's got the dramatic chops to pull off a character as grand as Frederick Douglass. hope the only comic relief from him they showed in the trailer
read up on the John Brown rebellion if you don't know about it though and don't mind spoilers. it's a story that's begging to be a TV show or movie but it can so easily be botched. I'll watch it and hope they stick the landing
love John Brown but this looks kinda whack and silly
seems to be the point. looks like they’re going the Django route in terms of tone & style.
premieres tonight, reviews have been really good:

Ethan Hawke coming for the emmy next year
ethan great but at times kinda over the top but i love that and it fits with the vibe theyre going for
Is this more of a comedy than a drama?
hard to describe lol there's definitely a lot of humor but it's mixed in with some very dramatic, tense moments and at times the violence is pretty graphic...Hawke's performance is definitely comical but also pretty scary at times...if I had to go with one or the other I'd say it's still a drama/period piece
tbh liked the first 2 eps but there wasnt anything to LOVE yet, but im def gonna keep watching bc i like the vibes lol

I mean it's a miniseries so can't hurt to at least finish it out...personally I'm digging it though...acting is top notch (Daveed was great as Douglass in this 3rd episode and Hawke is awesome as usual)

same, loved ep 3
I love this show, Im not sure if I can watch this show again on shrooms,, because the second episode was pretty intense. I love where it is filmed because it's so nice in 4k, but it felt like I was watching it in 16k
Been wanting to check this out. Trailer looks really good
it's definitely worth checking out...a bit uneven at times but all in all a solid miniseries so far
This took the #1 spot from The Queen's Gambit in my 2020 tv series rankings
