Giving Vol 1 another listen today. The album has always been one of my favs but today I'm listening really closely to the lyrics. I can see the album heavily influenced Lil Wayne. To start, Wayne re-used JAY Z's pose from the album art on his own Vol. 1 - Tha Carter 1.
In addition, Wayne has the title Lucky Me tattooed on his face in reference to the song:
He also mentioned having a verse from it tattooed on his leg in People magazine:
"In People magazine’s “Four Albums That Changed My Life,” Lil Wayne named Jay-Z’s In My Lifetime, Vol. 1. He said of the album, “‘Lucky Me’ is my favorite song. Wayne revealed, “I actually have ‘Lucky Me’ tattooed on my neck. And I have a verse of that song tattooed on my leg.”"
He's also quoted the album multiple times in his career:
JAY Z - City Is Mine
Lil Wayne Ft. Mannie Fresh - Bring It Back
Either I'm The illest nigga doing it or these niggas is losing it
JAY Z - Friend Or Foe '98
Lil Wayne & Young Money - 3 Kings (Freestyle)
Boy you know who you dun f***ed with?
A gun in your face and that's all you can come up with?
JAY Z - Lucky Me
Lil Wayne Ft. JAY Z - Mr. Carter
Swear to everything when I leave this earth
It's gon' be on both feet, never knees in the dirt
You could try me f***a but when I squeeze it hurts, fine
We'll lose two lives, yours and mines
Gimme any amount of time don't let Ms. Carter grieve
At the funeral parlor dripping tears on my sleeve
JAY Z - Lucky Me
Lil Wayne - Megaman
Told the judge didn't budge it was him or me
And has rapped over the "Sunshine" instrumental and the "Where I'm From" instrumental from the album
I think it is refreshing to look back and see the history. Now a days tons of rappers quote Wayne in their songs, from Kendrick Lamar/Schoolboy Q (Michael Jordan) to YG/Rich Homie Quan (My Nigga) to Tory Lanez (Shining - Freestyle) - but it's nice to look back and see who Wayne was showing love to throughout his career.
Wayne's always looked upto Hov as his Big Bro. Glad that 'beef' they had was squashed
Such an underrated album, people s*** on it for having like 2-3 bad songs, even though the rest is fire
Perfect example how an artist can still influence another artist in other ways besides sound
And dipset too
Dipset was a big influence on Carter 2. He even stayed in Harlem during some if its recording.

You're absolutely right. That probably explains some of those soulful songs on Carter 2. In fact, that might be my favorite era of his career. I'm glad Cam took him under his wing that summer of 05.
